A magnetic stirrer is a device used to create a rotating magnetic field. The magnetic stirrer creates a rotating field based on a rotating magnet bar or a plate containing the rotating magnet. In general, the bar magnet is coated with plastic and plate contains a rotating magnet. It is possible to create a rotating magnetic field with the help of a rotating magnet.
The magnetic stirrers are also known as magnetic stir plates and quite commonly used for experiments in chemistry and biology. They are very useful when you need to mix component, either solids or liquids and get a homogeneous liquid mixture. Some of the common samples include bacterial growth media as well as buffer solutions. The main function of a stirrer is to agitate the liquid for speeding up the reactions or improving mixtures. A magnetic stirrer is often used with hot plates.
The stir bar is the magnetic bar which is immersed in the liquid to provide the stirring action. Stir bars are typically coated in Teflon, or, glass to be chemically inert so it cannot contaminate or react with the reaction mixture they are in. The basic model of the bar is octagonal or circular, though there are other special shapes for more efficient stirring.
The magnetic stirrer usually has a capacity of four (4) litres or less because of their small size so they are used for relatively small experiments. On the other hand, stir bars do not work properly with viscous liquids or thick suspensions. However, one of the advantages is that the process to clean and sterilized is easy.
Magnetic stirring equipment permits variable speed stirring depending on the requirement. It is advisable to use a gentle stirring instead of a violent one, bearing in mind not only the stirring of the liquid culture medium and expose the cells to the gas on the surface, but also to avoid damage to the cell.
On the other hand, the fluid often changes in the viscosity of the medium, either increasing or decreasing. These changes sometimes cannot be easily detected, so it is advisable to measure the sample to detect changes. Some devices can alert about these changes, but most of the magnetic stirrer cannot.
