The study of diseases through blood and body fluids, is performed by means of devices of clinical chemistry analysers or laboratory, which are analyzed to diagnose the pathologies of patients, to concretize information in the prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of diseases.
Generally, the tests are part of a routine examination, to discover changes in health, helping experts to determine clinical charts, to plan or evaluate treatments and control diseases, being the most common, those that calculate blood sugar levels, in addition to the study of electrolytes, blood enzyme levels, hormone levels, protein levels, among others.
Functions of Clinical Chemistry Analysers
In laboratory and hospital units, devices must be in place to measure the components of patients’ blood samples, as an instrument of analysis and testing, for the study of metabolic balance by urine samples, blood serum, etc.
Therefore, this device measures the concentrations of different fluids based on color or increase of enzymes, after a series of chemical reactions. The analysis of the samples will allow the diagnosis of diseases such as creatinine in urine in action of the kidneys.
Therefore, this device operates with optical and electrochemical techniques, developed as follows:
Optical Techniques:
- Colorimetry: it is done by taking the sample by mixing it with the reagents, which produce the color, and the grouping of elements that will determine it.
- Photometry: thanks to the photodetector a light is transmitted on the sample with waves prepared to measure the amount of light attracted, concerning the element of the sample.
Of note are the principles of absorbance (ability of a medium to absorb light), turbidimetry (measurement of turbidity produced by substances suspended in a liquid medium), fluorescence (light emitted by a substance that absorbs light in one wavelength and emits it in another wavelength).
Electrochemical techniques
- Direct potentiometry: the use of ion selective electrodes (ISE) is widespread and is mainly used for ion determination in samples. This method is used to measure ions such as Na+, K+, CI- and Li+. ISEs that measure current flows by ion-selective membranes, capable of determining the concentration of the same.
- Indirect potentiometry: it handles selective ion connections, resulting in high cadences and is the most widely used in central laboratories. It requires prior dilution, unlike direct potentiometry, and its results are expressed in moles.
Advantages of Clinical Chemistry Analysers
Generally, the importance of the analyzers within the laboratories, is given through the evaluation in the performance of the device as such, since its development, is through automatic systems, where the samples are introduced and analyzed, in which it can be linked to a series of adjustments for mass studies, being recommended for units within health centers.
On the other hand, semiautomatic devices are better suited for small auxiliary spaces or medical consultations, which work with small amounts of samples.
It should be noted that the number of samples improves considerably with the use of selective ion electrodes, and the random access mode, provides a valuable level of flexibility, recommended for those laboratories or health centers that want to increase productivity, since it is possible to load samples randomly and continuously to obtain results, patient by patient, in very short time.
