What is the function of a Magnetic Stirrer?

A magnetic stirrer is a device used in chemistry laboratories, capable of mixing liquids in a container by a rotating magnetic field, which rotates a magnetic rod and is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). They are used for low density liquids and low density solids. It is silent, efficient and has no direct contact with the solution to be mixed (no contamination of the sample).

As well as, it works to introduce high reaction liquid substances for fear of runoff and avoid accidents. There are different types of shakers depending on the application, these can be with grill or simple, and different speeds.

Methods of use of magnetic stirrers

The first magnetic stirrer was developed by Salvador Bonet of SBS in 1977. He introduced rotation for stirring power in “liters of water”, which is the standard today.

The magnetic stirrer, commonly used in chemistry and/or biology laboratories, to homogeneously fuse solutions and suspensions for testing and testing.

The stirrers are adjusted from a plate and moved through an electric motor, then the substance is integrated into the vessel that is positioned on the vibrating base.

The most commonly used types of agitators in the laboratory are:

  • Magnetic: A magnetic bar is used, this equipment achieves the mixture thanks to the magnetic force, which is produced between the bar and the plate on which the container with the liquid is positioned.
  • Tray Shaker: Causes a circular movement that performs the sample mixture, through an electric motor.
  • Vortex Agitator: Generates vortices in the liquid being mixed, when rotated, on a rubber surface.
  • The mixture is obtained by turning the sample containers on a vertical plane.
  • Orbital Shaker: Uses a platform parallel to the surface, with an eccentric orbital motion, much like a tray shaker works.
  • Roller shaker: The mixture is obtained, using closed tubes that slide on rollers, which rotate horizontally.
  • Vertical Shaker: In this equipment, the axis of movement is vertical, and its end, which is equipped with paddles similar to those of a domestic mixer, is introduced into the container with the mixture.

Physical Structure of Magnetic Shakers

A magnetic stirrer consists of a magnetic stirring rod, which is covered by a layer of plastic with Teflon material, and a plate underneath, of which a series of electromagnets in circular form are made to create a rotating magnetic field. Generally, the plate has an array of electrical resistors, to provide them with necessary heat, and heat some chemical solutions. During the operation of a typical magnetic stirrer, the magnetic stirring rod, is slid into a container, it is placed on top of the plate where the magnetic fields or the rotating magneto, exert their influence on the coated magneto and promote its mechanical rotation.

These devices are quiet, efficient, and have no moving parts that can break or wear, are easy to clean and disinfect.
