What is the purpose of a Recirculating Cooler?

A Recirculating Cooler is a piece of Laboratory equipment that forms a closed, high-efficiency cooling system used in a variety of external cooling applications. They are particularly suited to laboratory applications requiring continuous use. They provide a constant, reliable source of liquid coolant for laboratory, clinical or industrial applications. A recirculating cooler can reach temperature ranges from -25°C to 130°C (some can therefore act as heaters). Digital PID temperature controllers ensure that the recirculating cooler reaches the desired temperature precisely and quickly.

What is the function of a recirculating cooler?

The main function of a recirculating cooler is to remove mechanical or electrical heat, operating on the principle that the temperature of an object or system is controlled by the inward or outward flow of heat. They are commonly used to provide constant low-temperature conditions for inspections, chemical, biological and physical experiments to be carried out at low temperatures, mainly employed in medicine, food processes, the chemical industry and teaching in universities and research institutes.

Among the main common features of recirculating chillers we find :

  • The closed circulation system can prevent cooling
  • evaporation and pollution, saving energy.
  • The circulation system is equipped with a filter, which keeps the cooling medium clean and prevents clogging of the instrument.
  • They have a built-in liquid level monitor, so the liquid level inside
  • the bath can be checked visually.
  • The circulation system is equipped with a pressure gauge, displaying the pressure of the circulation system.
  • Most of the above-mentioned recirculating coolers can operate at temperatures ranging from -25°C to 130°C.

How does a recirculating cooler work?

A recirculating cooler works by incorporating high-flow coolant circulation to speed up the process of removing heat from an object. These systems include: a compressor, a condenser, a thermostatic expansion valve and an evaporator. And the cooling process begins when refrigerant gas is pumped into the compressor and becomes a high-temperature, high-pressure gas. This gas then moves into the condenser, where ambient air or water takes the heat from the refrigerant and condenses it from gas to liquid.

Then, in its liquid state, the coolant passes through the thermostatic expansion valve where pressure and temperature drop, causing the fluid to evaporate and convert to gas. When the gas state returns, the coolant is returned to the compressor and the process begins again. As this is a continuous service, recirculating chillers do not waste refrigerant or water throughout the process. It’s important to note that this process may vary slightly depending on whether the recirculating cooler has a water-cooled or air-cooled condenser.
