Orbital shakers are laboratory equipment used to combine, divide or prepare substances. They create movement between liquids, or between liquids and solids, to achieve mixing, suspension, dispersion, homogenization, heat transfer and other processes. They are compact, versatile, high-performance and long-lasting, and can be used with a wide variety of other equipment such as incubators, refrigerators and environmental chambers.
Orbital shaker functions
The main function of this computer is to enable uniform mixing of components. These devices are frequently used in clinical and research laboratories for mixing, homogenizing and preparing combinations of substances. There is a wide variety of models and presentations of this equipment, depending largely on their size and whether their speed is fixed or adjustable.
Parts of an orbital shaker
The main component of an orbital shaker is its propulsion system, also known as the shaker motor. There are different shakers with different components each, but they generally manage similar features, unique to each orbital shaker:
- The base: where the orbital plate is located. This base carries the motor that turns the tray, contains the power supply and the knobs that regulate movement speed and heat.
- The plate: it passes through the rotor and follows guides that allow the platform to rotate in orbit at the pre-set speed, thus mixing the components.
- Side plates: many orbital mixer models feature side plates on the platform, which allow any type of container to be fitted and secured in a vertical position.
Some feature a platform with a powerful, uniform stirring mechanism, and are designed for safe, continuous operation. Several models have a tilting platform with horizontal safety bars, and rubber pads for easy adjustment, and allow different types of flasks, vials and precipitate glasses to be placed on their surface.
Some of this equipment features a gripping platform or clamps that hold everything in place at the start of the shaking process. This equipment features a time control that can be adjusted as required, and some have a speed control that can be adjusted as required. At the top is a platform with eccentric orbital movement, on which the sample holders are placed, and which has a non-slip material.
Recommendations for using an orbital shaker
Generally speaking, this equipment is highly resistant and has a long service life. Always bear in mind the following considerations:
- Avoid spilling substances on your surface.
- Switch your computer on and off correctly.
- Make sure the surface you’re using is flat.
- Cover it with protective plastic to prevent dust accumulation.
