How is Water Oxygen Measured in the Nuclear Sector?

Oxygen meters are equipment designed to calculate the amounts of dissolved oxygen in liquids. Generally, it is shown by scales starting per million (ppm) and by saturation (%), in order to calculate the water quality.

In the case of nuclear power plants, the water consumption is 1000 MW and uses between 15 and 20 hm3 per year, where only 95% are returned and is monitored by means of oxygen meters, so that aggressive changes in the ecosystem do not occur. All of this is based on the functions performed by oxygen meters to convert water into sustainable sources for the use of raw materials.

Operation of Oxygen Meters

Oxygen meters, structured by sensors and polarographic probes, consist of silver anodes coated in platinum wire, and function as a cathode to record the oxygen present in the solution. During the application of the 790mV potentials, oxygen within the membrane is minimized into hydrogen ions and silver chloride is transferred into the anode, causing flow currents equal to the amount of oxygen in the samples.

It should be noted that the dissolution of oxygen has to do with certain factors, such as temperature, salinity of liquids and atmospheric pressure, and at Kalstein we enforce the proper functions of oxygen meters capable of providing these variables automatically, guaranteeing records. Where our equipment provides compensation calibration that allows us to adjust the values recorded in relative and absolute millivolts that ensure measurements to a known standard.

Water Measurements

For years, natural events such as floods, volcanic eruptions, pandemics, fires and oil spills affect the entire population and the environment. As well as the climate changes we are going through, it affects the health of the waters. The ion meters for the nuclear sector, records the variations produced before facts that decrease the quality of groundwater.

Thanks to the use of oxygen meters, it is possible to reveal the ethereal. Through sensors, information delivery provides all types of reliable and timely data. With this equipment, water quality assessment allows to find all kinds of pollution source. In addition, the study of each oxygen molecule present in the water, is quickly collected the fundamentals about its onset and flow.

Tips for the correct use of Oxygen Meters

The use of oxygen meters is of great importance because it allows to record the purity levels of the waters, and thanks to the probes with which it works the calculations are much more effective and optimal. However, maintenance processes must be followed to ensure results. For this reason, the electrolytic solution must be taken care of or replaced periodically, but before it must be polarized to avoid any residual agent that has remained in the cavity. The process of polarization is variable because it depends on the materials and factors that differentiate it. That said, at Kalstein we are able to perform such actions, in which they are approximately 6 minutes making our oxygen meter the fastest on the market.

Finally, to achieve the correct calibration, air bubbles must be prevented from remaining so that the measurements are not altered. These actions should be done regularly to set the values to 100% and following these tips, the equipment will always be reliable and accurate.
